Helicopters in the Offshore-Wind industry – their unexploited benefit

[Program only available in English]
While the general Offshore-Industry is an emerging market itself, the importance to optimize logistics within the installation and O&M phase is increasing with the market development as well. The target to reach lower costs for offshore transportations of personnel and cargo - due to e.g. “zero-bids” and increasing distances of windfarms to shore – can be accomplished by an efficient logistic set-up of vessels and helicopters. These concepts have not yet benefitted from the full potential of helicopters as transportation solutions, why possibilities to improve their application will be presented.

Low-Speed Shaft Coupling

[Program only available in English]
Against the background of driving energy cost down and the significance of reliability, particularly in the offshore segment, robustness and reliability of drivetrains is still on the agenda. This presentation will show how Geislinger Compowind®, a low-speed shaft coupling made of advanced composites, is able to support us on the road to meet these requirements. Compowind® does not add complexity to the drivetrain, is fatigue-resistant and maintenance-free, light-weighted and free of any aging or wearing parts, rubber or hydraulic fluids. Thanks to its low restoring forces, bending moments are reduced down to 5-10%. Together with the gearbox mounted fully rigidly, this solution results in an surpassing enhancement of the overall dynamic behaviour of the whole drivetrain.
To back these claims, multi-body simulations were carried out in cooperation with the Center for Wind Power Drives (CWD), a department of the RWTH Aachen University. A LCOE study was done by the CWD as well to proof its economic justification. Condensed results of both studies will be presented together with a product presentation and the track record of the Compowind® coupling.

Workshop FUKUSHIMA

On behalf of our cooperating partner, we would like to draw your attention to the upcoming side-event at the industrial exhibition WindEnergy Hamburg in September 2018. In collaboration with the EnergyAgency FUKUSHIMA Renewable Energy Hamburg (EEHH) would cordially invite you to the following seminar:
Onshore-Wind Development in Fukushima, Japan

During the seminar wind energy development plans as well as the further energy related plans in the Prefecture of Fukushima will be presented by the Managing Director of the Energy Agency Fukushima, Mr. Yasuhiro Hattori.
About onshore wind plans in Fukushima:
After being hit by a strong earthquake, tsunami and subsequent nuclear accident in 2011, the Prefecture of Fukushima in Japan has developed an ambitious plan to completely switch to renewable energy sources by 2040. This plan has a strong backing of the Japanese government. First step of this plan is to install approx. 200 onshore wind turbines in the prefecture in the next few years – site assessment and licensing has mostly been completed. Within the Prefecture of Fukushima also a new research center has been developed in the last few years, the Fukushima Renewable Energy Institute. Here, significant research for renewable energy supply, energy storage and Hydrogen has been concentrated – supported by the Government of Japan.
About EnergyAgency FUKUSHIMA:
The Renewable Energy Hamburg cluster and the Energy Agency of Fukushima have signed a Memorandum of Understanding in September 2018, to mutually support companies and information exchange in the field of wind energy and the development of a hydrogen economy.

A Breakthrough in Predicting Bearing Failure – SeerWorksTM Reliability

[Program only available in English]
4LinesFusion has developed a complex, holistic modelling tool that analyzes the complexity of lubricant interactions at the quantum level through to the construction - SeerWorksTM Reliability. Unlike industry standards, 4LinesFusion uses SeerWorksTM Reliability in order to consistently and accurately predict bearing failure whether from White-etching cracks, early detection of wear to stress corrosion cracking. The foundation of SeerWorksTM Reliability starts with the lubricant and combines that data with materials and other properties to assess risk of failure and automatically instructs the end user in what actions to take to reduce the risk of future failure. This presentation will outline the basic principles behind SeerWorksTM Reliability, validation studies, and how you can integrate SeerWorksTM Reliability into your current workflow.

Ultracapacitors: Improving Operational Safety and Reliability in Emergency Pitch Systems

[Program only available in English]
The presentation will discuss how ultracapacitors improve operational safety and reliability of emergency wind pitch systems. Renewable energy like wind power will represent the largest source of electricity growth over the next five years, driven by falling costs and aggressive investment in emerging economies. Development of new technologies to reduce turbine maintenance and costs, and improve reliability and lower levelized cost of energy (LCoE), will result in wider adoption of wind power generating systems. Turbine reliability and high energy throughput are a critical measure of wind generation and wind asset operators understand that operation and maintenance (O&M) costs must be minimized to maximize energy generation. Although all components in a wind turbine must work reliably, the wind pitch system is key. It is required for optimum blade pitch control under adverse wind conditions to maintain turbine uptime. Maxwell is actively designing ultracapacitor-based energy storage solutions to enhance the reliability of electric pitch control systems, which are typically battery-based. Ultracapacitors, unlike batteries, have the ability to deliver quick bursts of power in short timeframes - an ideal function for emergency feathering control (EFC). Upon loss of main turbine power, or when high winds threaten the safety of the turbine, ultracapacitors provide the burst power needed to feather the blades to a safe position, protecting the turbine from destructive wind force.

Damit Vereisung kein Thema wird

realisieren.

PERISCOPE Seminar: Emission Free Maintenance of Wind Farms

Are you active in the world of wind at sea and do you see the importance of emission-free sailing? Then block the afternoon of 27 September in your diary. On this day, Center of Maritime Technologies Germany (CMT) and Maritime by Holland are organising a seminar to map the possibilities for emission-free maintenance of wind farms. The seminar will take place during Wind Energy Hamburg, an event that attracts many international players from the onshore and offshore wind sector.

Achieving the ambitious goals of the EU in the area of sustainable energy requires an increased supply of wind energy. Because there is plenty of room at sea, many new offshore wind farms will be built in the coming years. The Netherlands aims to generate at least 4450 MW by wind energy at sea in 2023. This is more than twelve times more than in 2015!

With the construction of new wind farms, maintenance efforts will also increase sharply. Now maintenance vessels are still sailing on conventional fuels, but their exhaust gasses are not in line with the sustainable generation of energy. That is why the emissions from maintenance vessels must be significantly reduced.

On 27 September, we would like to invite you to think about solutions that reduce emissions from maintenance vessels. Various solutions are reviewed, such as (hybrid) electrical solutions and solutions using hydrogen-fuel cells. In addition, challenges in the area of availability and storage of energy and connectivity are discussed. The seminar can therefore provide an important stimulus for players in the entire chain: from client to system supplier!

Challenges of different safety cultures

On a construction site, we are experiencing the many challenges of different safety cultures. We install wind turbines worldwide and the teams usually consist of various employees from around the world. Regional, internal, external sub-contractor and customer) cultures must be brought together to avoid any incidents: Everybody is responsible for the safety culture on site. Preparation is key for success. Beside the technical preparation it is also important to create a
country specific awareness of the local culture. This gets often totally underestimated. In a lot of cases, safety is only about paper work and handbooks than about actually getting across all relevant information to the guys in the field. Site leadership, training and supervision need to be improved to adequately deal with these challenges.
